Penta-( m -digalloyl) -glucose, or any soluble tannin; used in electron microscopy to enhance the contrast. Addition of tannic acid to fixatives greatly improves, for example, the image obtained of tubulin subunits in the microtubule, or the HMM decoration of microfilaments.
